Many people have considered working from home, only to be turned off by products offering them the ability to do so for a fee. While it’s not really possible to work at home for free, as there are always some underlying costs, it is possible to find a work at home job without paying for the information.

If you’d like to work at home, but are unsure what you’d like to do, you should begin by assessing your skills. Do you have basic computer skills? Are you a writer? Can you build or design websites? Can you make crafts to sell? Do you have an excellent phone personality? Any of these skills can be marketed for the work at home job market.

There are several good websites with forums that specialize in working at home. An example would be “wahm” (aka work at home mom) forums. Go to any search engine and do a search for general terms like “wahm forum”, or if you have a specific business idea such as making and selling candles try typing in “candle making forum”. Once you find a few forums you can read posts, ask questions and just get to know others who share your interests. Registering for these forums is usually free. Just be sure to read the terms of service for each forum that you register with.

No matter what you choose to do you can expect some upfront costs. If you plan to work online then obviously you are going to need a computer and internet access. Depending on your business other start up costs might include business cards, a dedicated phone line, advertising, office supplies, etc. Plan carefully and try to keep your costs down at first. As you start making money you can invest some of your profits right back into your business.

Working from home can be extremely rewarding. As you begin the process, take things slowly and learn as much as you can. Avoid signing up for too many memberships, and avoid shelling out tons of money to get started. Take the time to build your business from the ground up, and remember that it will take a lot of hard work to do so. In a few years, you’ll be able to look back in amazement at how far you’ve come.
