Careers in graphic design are expected to be one of the largest and fastest growing job markets through 2014. Graphic design, designing websites and computer animation are going to be careers which most people would choose. Competition will continue to be steep, even though many jobs are available for someone pursuing a career in computer graphic design. Some people love it as a career, for others purely as a hobby while some may like to use it as a part time freelancing tool. A four year college degree or a Bachelors Degree is sufficient to become a computer graphic designer. For getting some technical positions, you need only two years college degree or Associates Degree. This type of career can not move forward unless you get further education. It is important to understand the need for formal education if you want to pursue a career in this field.

About thirty percent of those in a computer graphic design career work independently as freelancers. Holding a regular job of a computer graphic designer or any other computer related profession is normal for nearly half of the freelancers. Freelancing is a viable option in this career as there is no dearth of demand for graphic designers from small firms who can not pay for the larger design firms.

There are many other careers in computer graphic design. You could choose a career in the print media like books and magazines, audio media like radio advertising or digital media like films and television. Not so much in terms of variety but you could expect a steady stream of work if you seek a career in a large or small specialist company. Or you may even decide to work as a freelancer in this profession.

If you wish to pursue this as a career, a college degree, desire, and knowing where you want to go is not enough. You need to develop skills using graphic design software and other computer related skills. You should make a portfolio which carries a collection of some of your best work. These portfolios are often the deciding factor on who gets a job and who is still waiting to start their career!

Just after finishing your college, and coming to a decision what you wish to do and where you want to go, your focus should be to get that first entry level job. You can get them through online job boards, online or print classified ads or through the college or university placement desks. Online job boards, classified ads as well as job for hire boards are the places where freelance job opportunities are displayed. For design careers work for hire boards work better than other career options as it is widely understood that this is a not-very-cheap endeavor. Good luck in pursuing your graphic design career!
