Old fashion word of mouth and the ads using the printing press was the beginning of the marketing age. Television and radio opened a new method of advertising, but the complexity of both required an group of advertisers working full time for the ads to be successful.

Today, there is the internet. The World Wide Web provides business with the opportunity to gain customers that was out of reach before. Email and search engine marketing provided traffic to the site, but affiliate marketing is quickly climbing to the advertising method of choice. This has opened the door to work at home entrepreneurs.

What is affiliate marketing? In its simplest form, it is an online marketing strategy where web traffic to one site is used to create and drive traffic to another site. The second site then pays the first site for the amount of traffic generated.

Here’s an example: Say Joe is interested in baseball cards. He goes online and finds a site designed by Terry with information about popular rookie cards. Rookie cards might be a hobby of Terryas or a site he designed specifically for affiliate marketing; it does not matter because it has information that interests Joe. Joe spends some time reading and looking around, and at some point sees a link to an auction house specializing in rare cards. He clicks on that link.

Since you are an affiliate of the scrapbooking supply store whose link I clicked on, you will be credited for my click. They will pay you according to the terms set forth in your agreement. Usually this means getting a commission payment or bonus if I buy something.

As long as you have access to the internet and can create a website (or know how to get one made for you inexpensively), you have the opportunity to start a real work at home business. The key to successes is the amount of traffic that your site gets. Make sure that your site is interesting to people. A dull or unorganized site will produce failure.

Businesses are crazy about affiliate marketers. For them, more people visiting their site leads to more purchases and thus more revenue. It’s like free money to them. Because affiliate marketing is very much a pay-for-performance deal, while even websites about belly button lint might somehow be able to get an affiliate relationship set up, if no one visits or clicks through them then the website designer has a business that is losing money.

The good news is that anyone can run a successful affiliate marketing business with little experience. As long as you have a clear understanding about market trends and can design a website, you can create success right from your home. Just find a topic that interests you and create a site about it, then join a related affiliate program.
