Just starting out in enjoying an off road experience can be tough, since there are so many things that a beginner will need to know before they embark on their adventure. There are many safety regulations, modifications, and environment details to keep in mind while enjoying the sport of off road driving.
The ideal vehicle for an off road adventure should have some type of 4-wheel drive. Vehicles such as a Jeep or Land Rover will do wonderfully- so long as they are an SUV or some type of truck. Sorry car owners- there is little you can do to get in on the off road adventure since the height from the ground to the car is all but too short.
Tires are a popular subject among off road experts. Depending on the terrain one is going to be traveling in, vastly different tires may be needed. For a muddy adventure, drivers might want a tire that is studded to grip as much ground as possible- even in muddy situations. For rockier fun, a tire that is textured enough to grip even wet rocks is going to be a great asset.
Sometimes the suspension and axle need to be modified for some types of off road adventures. If one is wishing to go “rock crawling,” they should be prepared to make many modifications to the vehicle. The suspension needs to be modified to take the abuse of climbing rocks- while the axle needs to be raised so that rocks being climbed don’t damage the underbelly of the vehicle.
Off road adventures are also a competitive sport- although it comes in many forms. The most popular is Formula Off Road racing, in which some of the most extreme off road adventures can be had. Vehicles in this competition will need to be highly modified to take all types of abuse- even descending or ascending near vertical cliffs. This sport is very dangerous, and it should be noted that there are strict safety regulations and training instructions to gain entry into this competition.
The off road lifestyle doesnt have to be as extreme as most make it out to be. In many cases just a casual stroll through the forest in an all terrain truck or SUV is enough adrenaline to qualify the act for off road classification. Since there are so many types of off road techniques, it’s recommended to talk to a professional who can recommend the best one.
Final Thoughts
Getting to know nature a little better by spending all day climbing rocks, plowing through mud, and overall enjoying the scenery is a great way to spend a lazy day. Best yet, one can do it in the comfort of their own vehicle.
