Don’t Let The Digital Camera Companies Trick You!
Published on August 18th, 2008 by Vincent Manga in EcommerceIf you want to purchase a digital camera, you really must have at least some idea of what you need to look out for and avoid. You don’t have to be an expert, but you must at least know some basics to make sure you don’t end up with an inadequate camera for your digital photography. The following is a series of things you need to understand and look out for, there there is less plus several things you must avoid.
The number of megapixels the digital camera is capable of:
With the exception of the high-end professional digital cameras of 12 plus megapixels, the number of megapixels a digital camera is capable of generally speaking is the most important quality factor when it comes to how good your digital photos will come out. In the case of the high-end digital cameras the lenses themselves will also play a very important part.
A very important thing to look out for when you are buying a digital camera is to read the small print as it were in regards to the megapixels of the camera. You see a lot of digital camera manufacturers will try to trick you into thinking they’re digital camera is capable of a higher number of megapixels then is really true.
Here’s what I mean, it is normal for digital cameras to have the number of megapixels they are capable of printed on them in big print, however quite often you will also find printed in relatively small print underneath the big print something like, five megapixels software enhanced to six megapixels. This will never be the same as a true six megapixel camera and will not be capable of the same quality as a true six megapixel camera would.
A digital camera’s zoom
You need to know just how much zoom you are going to need on your camera. It will greatly depend on your use of your digital camera, and only you can answer this question. One thing to remember is that the more zoom you have on your digital camera the more you’ll be able to do with it.
Now there is another important thing to understand here, digital cameras come with two kinds of zoom: optical zoom and digital zoom. Optical zoom makes use of lenses within the camera to zoom in on objects. Digital zoom simply digitally makes the image bigger and in the process will lose you a considerable amount of quality.
Again just like with the megapixels of a digital camera, the manufacturers often try to mislead you by using big wording stating how much digital zoom the digital camera has but only mention that the zoom is in fact digital in small print.
Personally I never use digital zoom. This is because I would much rather take my picture at full quality and then when I’m at home make use of my PC to make the image larger. This way it is possible to see in real time how much visual quality you will be giving up and of course you will still have the original photo at full quality.
3. Powersupply
Many people don’t stop to think about the powersupply of the digital camera they are thinking about buying, but I’m sure you can agree that the last thing you want to happen while you’re out and about taking your pictures is that you suddenly ran out of power and can no longer take any more.
With the lower end cheaper more commercial digital cameras AA and AAA rechargeable batteries are quite common. In recent years these batteries have come down considerably in price so this isn’t such a bad thing. You just have to remember to keep several sets charged and ready to go at all times.
Pretty much all of the higher end more professional digital cameras utilize their own specific powersupply. The powersupply will normally be lithium-based and in many cases can be quite expensive.
These batteries normally last longer than normal batteries, but you will still want to have at least one spare battery Pack. Because of the price of these batteries you will need to take them into account when you’re purchasing your digital camera.
It’s not very normal but some digital cameras do exist that can take normal AA and AAA batteries as well as batteries specifically made for it.
When you take it upon yourself to purchase your next digital camera, remember to look out for the things mentioned in this article. Also once you have narrowed your search down, look at online reviews to compare each camera side-by-side.
This is especially important if you are buying a high-end digital camera, since as I have mentioned there are other factors such as the digital cameras lenses that will affect the quality of the pictures the digital camera takes.
